Another rainy day. It has been so rainy and wet here that we have not had the opportunity to get out to the yard and get our raised beds built. For most of the things that I plant thats not really an issue.
But for those cold weather crops, like peas and carrots and lettuces...well, I dont really have a place to put them.
After much thought and discussion(in my head) I decided to plant a couple things in containers. For most people the idea of container gardening doesnt pose much of a problem. I, on the other hand, seem to have issues with it. And for some reason they are still unresolved. Unresolved issues...I hear that those arent a good thing to have.
So, as not to let the container get the best of me, I set out to try this one more time. Maybe it will help that I am wearing S's shoes instead of my own.
Here we have an empty pot. WITH drainage holes. I tell myself that this has to be a good start.
I have read that putting some rocks in the bottom of your pot helps with drainage. How many? I have no idea. I let G decide that.
And then he made them all pretty.
Its always good to have some moral support.
So then we mixed up some compost and top soil.
And scooped it into the pots. I took a break right about here. G looked like he may be awhile with that size scoop....
Ohhhh...pretty peas. I brought these pretty peas home with me all the way from Oregon.
G was pretty sure that the ones in his hands were ready to eat right now...I had to explain to him that that was not the case.
We got them laid out on the soil and then pushed them in.
Next up? Carrots.
We stuck some markers in.
And then we were all done. Or so you THOUGHT. This is where I talk to the sweet little seeds and let them know how much I love them and that I will take very good care of them. I will move you outside in the beautiful sunshine as soon as S gets home. Please, please, please grow for me in the containers. Thats what I said. Then I watered them and patted them ever so gently....
Off to clean up.
Shiny and clean.
The end.

I understand exactly what you mean! I talk to my plants & seeds too. I pray over them. I think happy & positive thoughts when I'm around them. And then I thank them for growing so well and giving my family food. And the best part is, it seems to work! :-)
I am not the green thumb here. I have good luck with herbs in pots but have not tried much else. Your boy & dog are too cute!
Lookin' good! It's raining here too.
Okay, all I have to say is good luck with that. I'll be prayin for ya! LOL
BTW, Lots of love going out to those chickens!!! Where did those come from?
YAY!! Good luck with your container garden, dear friend. I am one of those people who kills things in pots too, so I know just how brave you are to attempt it!! :)
I've never had much luck with container gardening either. Herbs do ok for me - but vegetables seem to revolt and refuse to grow unless they are firmly in the ground. I have no idea why. But I've never tried a cute little helper. I'm betting THAT makes all the difference.
That kid is the BEST helper and I will never believe otherwise.
I started some lettuce in a big container to have on my deck. I didn't talk to the seeds but I did threaten the chickens about hopping in and scratching around.
Why such a pretty garden you will have. And with "G" to tend them I am sure they will do fine. He is a boy of many talents.
I *love* that top photo with all those seeds sprouting!!! Heavenly.
And see? I wasn't the only one to notice those two, new, purdy glass chickens! :-)
And I completely believe in your ability to container plant...I sent you the pamphlet, after all... you can't go wrong!
:-)
adding myself to the comment thread. because it never works the first time, for some reason. it's important that I do this. you know, just in case anybody says anything funny. go ahead, michelle.
I understand your drama with pots. I've never been terribly successful with them either.
Hint on the carrots. When it's time to thin them---just snip off the ones you don't want at ground level. I guess pulling them up tends to upset the ones around them that you'd like to keep.
Good luck! I'm sure the additions of S's shoes, a tiny boys hands and cutie dog will lift any evil spirits that might be hovering over your pots. :)
Peas from Oregon, huh? I promise they will grow. Ours are peeking out, despite the rain and cold days, but will they survive the onslaught of the local slug population? That won't be a threat for your peas safely in their pots. Great idea!
Your little guy is such a super helper. What will be next for him?
P.S. Just as I clicked on the "word verification" thingy, a whole bunch of electronic chatter started and wouldn't stop. Male voices talking all at once. What's up with that? Any secrets in your house?
Hi Farmgirl, thanks for the shout out! My head is too stuffed for anything even slightly funny to come out. I'll try better next time.
It's the little signs...the seeds are def gonna come up now! Whisper sweet sounds to them (but don't sing...that ain't sweet). I am sure they'll do great!
You have the sweetest kids! :-) I've been following your blog for months now.
