Diggin it.

Can you guess what I have been doing?

Thats right. Diggin.

And look what I dug up. Mmmmmmmm...

This season I grew an heirloom variety called Russian Banana Fingerling. Its description says, "The best known fingerling" Small banana shaped tubers with buff yellow skin and light yellow flesh thought to have originated in Russia. Medium sized, lavender flowered plants are resistant to scab and somewhat resistant to late blight. Late maturity, good yield, and stores well.

And as you can see from my tater beds I have plenty more where that came from.

So, Im sure you know what Ill being doing tomorrow.

Ill leave you to visit with my little seal/manatee family while I dig away.

LOL, my hands look like yours most days.

Those potatoes look scrumptious!

How do you know for sure when to harvest, dig them up? I've still got some in a container...someone told me that I need to wait for them to bloom, then when the flowers die...to dig them up.

Ummmm, mine never bloomed. LOL. They are just killing over, and dying. Maybe from our high heat?

Those are so pretty!! Nice work. You're totally going to need a fingernail brush to scrub all that dirt off your hands and from under your nails. I recently got a new one - I can send you my old one, if you'd like. :-)
Can't wait to hear what the flavor of those potatoes is like. I really, really love potatoes. I'd totally marry them if Trader Joe wasn't in line ahead of them.

Just look at those cute taters! They are just begging to get eaten. Except the manatees. They are begging to be the center piece on your table. Please tell me you didn't eat the manatees.

Um, how much do they weigh?

We stole a few of our German butterballs from one of the beds last night. Boy, were they delicious! Bill wouldn't let me touch the fingerlings yet. He said they were too small. Guess what we'll have with dinner tonight.....

Zitrone: So heres a question for you and/or Bill. I have done much research on these fingerlings and they say to let the plant die all the way back before you harvest them and then you are to harvest the whole plant at once....Which I am good with, but my plants arent dying back yet and still the taters are pretty much the size they are supposed to be. So, the question is...do I leave them alone till the plant begins to die back or go ahead and dig them up? What happens if they are in there too long???

Ok, Bill said you can leave them in until spring, but they will sprout. We continue to 'steal' from the plants, and so far they haven't noticed. We'll keep you posted.
Have you eaten the Manatees???!!!????

Zitrone: Thanks for letting me know. The funny thing is tho that the ones I just pulled up(the manatees) They had sprouts on them....Thats what made me ask if I had perhaps left them in too long...I just cant know....I think Ill just dig them as I need them...and hope for the best! Hows that new pupster? Hes adorable by the way. I bet him and Darby would have a blast together.
