Paintin Poll

Okay, here goes.

I am trying to get my house ready for the market. Yeah, the pain in your butt, people coming in your house all the time, market. I am excited and not. I am stressed and not. I am overwhelmed and okay, overwhelmed.

Had the Realtor in to look around and give us some feedback on potential changes to be made. We pretty much know what all we need to do, but hey, this is what he does all day, right? I'm not one to pass up help.

I knew one of the suggestions he was going to make was that I need to paint my family room. To make it a more neutral color. Currently it is a terra cotta color. (Terra warmth, to be exact) A dark, rusty orange color. I love it. I do, however, realize that everyone may not love it like I do. (As strange as that seems to me.) It is a pretty big room. It would be a pretty big project. Especially with a one year old running around. It is the main family living space.

So, do I paint it or not? Do I take the chance that I may miss some buyers because of the color of my room? If you were looking for a house would you not buy it based on one room color?

Help me. I need help. I am so on the fence.

For me, as a potential buyer, I wouldn't like that color. It probably looks great, but many people's things probably wouldn't be able to move right in there. If I was looking at a house, I would think to myself that I would have to paint that room before moving in because my living room stuff doesn't match.

Oprah just did a show where Nate Berkus helped some people get their house on the market and he used a color called "warm buff" from Lowe's.

I have very bold colors in my house and I know that when we put it on the market we will have to neutralize it.

That being said, I know it's hard with a small child.

If you aren't concerned about selling right away, you could have an open house and get a feel if its turning people off. But if it needs to sell quickly, I'd paint.

Good luck!! I hate moving!

I'm a C-U resident who has been on a "Designed to Sell" (HGTV, 11:00 pm every night) kick for a while now. (Even though I have no plans to move any time soon.) 99% of the time, they neutralize bold colors, saying (as leeanthro did) that potential buyers need to be able to see themselves and their stuff in the space. It's a strange phenomenon, seeing people come into these neutralized, pared-down rooms and say, "Oh, it's wonderful! It looks like a hotel!" (Does anyone really want to live in a hotel?) But, I have to admit, I generally find the new rooms more appealing, too. So...I'll vote for "paint" and wish you luck on a speedy sale.

Anonymous: Okay, so we are at 2 to paint and 1 not to.....

As you know, I happen to love the color of the room, but then you have people like my husband who don't like color at all. I think that is why most "experts" say to go neutral even though once someone moves in they usually paint to their own desires. I'd be more likely to try the open house route first without painting and then you can always paint if need be.

If you really don't want to do it, I would try it for a bit with that color and see what kind of feedback you get. If you have a looker mention the color, then take the plunge.

boogiemum: Yeah...I am leaning that way...I just hate this feeling that I may miss a potential buyer because of the color.

I see, my opinion isn't enough. I see how you are.

I love the color of your house, but I'll admit that when I've shopped for houses, seeing beyond the colors that other people have chosen is difficult.

I once looked at a house in which every room was some variation of pink or green (or both). The idea that I'd have to move in and live with the pepto bismol look clashing with my own belongings until I could find time or money to put things my way was definitely a factor in my moving on.

I didn't like the neutral colors in the house I bought, but my stuff at least "went" with everything until I changed it my way (as you know with bold red and yellow).

The idea of someday painting over everything is daunting.

Yeah, okay..I am gonna paint. And complain every minute of the way. It needs to be done. I just was sorta hoping someone else would do it for me!
