Sad times

Sigh.

I was delivered some sad news today. The local farmer that we have gotten our egg share from for the last few years has had to discontinue his egg deliveries. Hard times seem to have fallen in some shape or form on just about everyone these days. This particular situation stems from the increase in fuel prices, increase in the
cost of egg production, and the significant decrease in the egg yield right now.

Needless to say, this sads me. I love my farm fresh, free range eggs. I love that I was getting them from somebody semi-locally. I love that I was able to see and talk to our farmer when I was at the market every Saturday. I love knowing that the chickens were being well cared for and that they got to free range pret' near all day long.

They wont be closing the doors of their farm all together. However, I can only imagine how hard it was for them to make such a huge decision. A large portion of their time was committed to the chickens and making sure they were happy and healthy.

So, to help lighten the mood after hearing some sad news, I decided to cook eggs for dinner. Breakfast for dinner always seems to make things a little festive. A little more laid back, carefree.

Here are 2 of my eggs getting ready to be whisked together to make some waffles.

Heres my waffle batter.

Here are 2 pears sitting behind the waffle batter.

Heres a waffle.

Here are 2 more of my eggs being fried up in my cast iron skillet for the kids.

Sigh. I love my eggs.

And beautiful eggs they are! Now just a suggestion...do you have room for a chicken tractor? How about getting a few hens yourself? I think you may know someone that can give you a few pointers.
I'm just sayin'

ohhhh, goatgirl. I would love nothing more than to get a few hens of my own. Sadly, they are against the rules.

Now, generally speaking, I dont normally follow those, but I am sorta in a transition(so to speak) right now, so while the idea sounds very lovely, the hens will have to wait for a bit.

I would eat that waffle!

Oh that is too bad about the egg farmer. But I do love to have breakfast for dinner on occasion. Now looking at all those yummy eggs and waffles I'm hungry.

Can you still drive to the farm to get them? We are still considering chickens, when we get settled in someday. A few country roads will bring you straight to our house.

Oh, that really sucks!! I hate that these hard times are affecting the little guy, the one who's doing it right, way more than industrial agriculture.

We love breakfast for dinner! What kind of waffle maker is that? Do you like it? We were thinking about getting one but not sure. Sorry about your egg man. You'll be in business for yourself before you know it!

I'll have fresh eggs for you the next time I see you. And they are YUM-E!

Are you sure about that law. Get some very exotic looking hens and call them PETS not chickens. Say they are a 4H project of the kids or some such. Find a loop-hole.

Of course you could always have Agnes mail you some eggs!!!

Have you thought about putting up a note at your local market asking for farm fresh eggs? I would imagine there are probably more than a few small home operations (hobby farmers) that might be tickled to help you out. Just a thought.

Once you've had farm fresh, you can NEVER go back. I hope you can find a new somebody to get some from.

I re-read my comment and it sounded kind of pervy. Sorry about that.

Ohhh that is so sad about the chicken farmer. Sad for you too...you could convert one of you rooms in the house to a little room for a hen or two, the neighbors would never know. Now you family might not enjoy the mess but you would have fresh eggs!

Seriously good luck finding another egg source, Kim

Farmer Jen: C'mon over! Ill make you waffles.

Egghead: You, too. C'mon. We can all have waffles together.

Gnightgirl: The distance to get to the farm isnt a very realistic idea for us. Thats why it was so great that so many people were wanting them. It allowed him to be able to have a designated spot here in town to bring them for everyone.

Angie: What you said.

j.j.: Ha! I will be in business before I know it. I hope anyway! And then I will have you all over for eggs!

Mim: I read that you are having a hard time finding what to do with those eggs....really?

Greywolf: Loop holes....I love those. Im currently in the process of working on a solution.....Ha! Could I be any more cryptic?

Danni: Good thought. I have feelers out.

sugarcreekstuff: ahahhahah! I hadnt really noticed it sounded that way....well, not till you mentioned it anyway! I knew what what you were sayin!

inadvertentfarmer: I do have a guest bedroom.....

That is too bad. It's like losing your hairdresser! How do you go about finding another egg farmer you like? I feel sorry for you. I have my own hens and I don't like the idea of having to buy eggs again.

If you're ever in our neck of the woods, I'll have a couple of dozen ready to go for you!

Hi Don: Ha! It is like losing your hairdresser. Its traumatic. I have a couple ideas on what I may be able to do...but we will have to see if they come thru for me.

Awww...Thanks for the offer of eggs...thats very sweet of you.
